These braaibroodjies have been known to convert non-banana-eating folk into banana-devouring savages.

Feeds: 4–6
Prep: 20 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes

For the broodjies

  • 10 slices oat and honey bread
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 4–6 bananas (depending on size), sliced into rounds
  • 1 slab Lindt 70% dark chocolate, grated
  • 1 slab Lindt 70% dark chocolate, chopped

For the maple syrup whipped cream

  • 1 cup whipping cream, cold
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  1. To make the broodjies, spread out the bread slices, making sure each one has a partner, and brush with melted butter. Add the banana rounds in a layer and evenly sprinkle over the grated chocolate, followed by the chopped chocolate. Pop the tops on the sarmies, then brush both sides with butter and wrap them individually in foil.
  2. To make the cream, whip the cream in a large bowl until peaks begin to form. Fold in the vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup and whisk until stiff peaks form.
  3. Put the foil-wrapped broodjies on the grid over medium-heat coals for about 5 minutes per side. This will melt all the goodness together inside the broodjies. Then take the broodjies out of the foil, arrange them in a flip grid and braai until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream and try not to eat them all before you share them with your mates.
