FAUX TUNA APPETIZER

Vegan and Gluten-Free

Inspired by Cape Malays, this innovative dish offers a tantalizing taste experience. Featuring plant-based ingredients crafted to mimic the texture and flavour of tuna, this gluten-free and vegan appetizer celebrates Heritage Day with a fusion of South African and vegan culinary traditions.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of chickpeas, drained
  • 3 tablespoons vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 level teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 level teaspoon onion powder
  • Large pinch of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Habanero sauce (optional)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 level teaspoon Bragg Organic Sea Kelp Delight Seasoning or Nori seaweed, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Woolworths rice crackers (or crackers/bread of your choice)

Method

  1. In a food processor, blitz chickpeas for a second or two until slightly mashed. Alternatively, use a fork to mash them slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, combine vegan mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, optional Habanero sauce, finely chopped onion, and Bragg Organic Sea Kelp Delight Seasoning or Nori seaweed. Mix well.
  3. Add the mashed chickpeas to the bowl and mix everything thoroughly.
  4. Adjust seasoning with salt to taste.
  5. Serve immediately or refrigerate it overnight to allow the flavours to meld.
  6. Serve with rice crackers or crackers/bread of choice.
