In celebration of International Chefs Day this October, renowned chef George Jardine led an engaging, hands-on cooking demonstration at the Amy Foundation’s Hospitality Training Kitchen in Sybrand Park, Cape Town. The event gave participants from the Foundation’s Hospitality Program a unique opportunity to learn from one of South Africa’s top chefs.
Jardine, Head of Culinary for Africa and the Middle East at Valor Hospitality Partners, shared insights from his career and highlighted the empowering role of food. International Chefs Day, established 20 years ago, promotes the theme “Growing Great Chefs,” encouraging young people to explore food beyond sustenance.
The event aligned with the Amy Foundation’s mission to uplift youth by equipping them with practical hospitality skills. “Culinary education builds confidence, fosters creativity, and instills a sense of achievement. Our Hospitality Program opens doors to employment or entrepreneurship,” said Michelle Bagley, the Foundation’s Communications and Fundraising Manager.
Jardine prepared a chicken-based risotto, deboning a whole chicken to make stock from scratch, while sharing personal anecdotes with the learners. “I left school at 15 without formal qualifications, but the kitchen taught me everything. The culinary world offers endless opportunities if you’re willing to learn,” Jardine reflected.
Having started his career in Scotland before working in London and earning international acclaim, Jardine stressed that gourmet cooking is within reach for anyone. “With a little know-how, anyone can create something remarkable,” he said, plating the risotto restaurant-style to inspire the students.
The event also underscored Valor Hospitality’s dedication to community development. “Valor shares my passion for giving back. Over 90% of our workforce and products are sourced locally, and this event is part of our commitment to invest in the communities we serve,” Jardine added.
Since 2014, Valor Hospitality has partnered with the Amy Foundation, supporting youth empowerment through donations and skills development. In 2023, the company celebrated its 10th anniversary in Africa with an additional contribution to the Foundation’s initiatives.
“This partnership with Valor and George Jardine aligns perfectly with our goal of empowering youth to become self-sufficient. Vocational training in hospitality creates meaningful opportunities and lasting change,” Bagley explained.
Jardine concluded with a message of encouragement for the learners: “These young people may not see it yet, but the kitchen offers a world of opportunity. My goal is to help them realize that potential.”
