Bakers across South Africa came together, invested their time and talent and helped to bake a difference in the lives of children suffering from cancer – raising a whooping R2.1 million rand.
Celebrated as ‘National Cupcake Day’ at 60 shopping malls across the country, Cupcakes of HOPE calls on all their Cupcake Angels on this special day to bake a difference in the lives of children suffering from cancer.
Members of the public are invited to donate a small fee in return for a yummy cupcake.
“It was such an amazing experience to be part of this event this year. I will be getting more involved in the future. Shout out to you guys for selflessly making a difference in the lives of these warrior kids every single day – you guys are the type of people that make this world a better place,” said Cupcake baker, Jamie Lee.
“It warms my heart to see, that even during these difficult times, how people can still come together, still care and still contribute to making a difference in the lives of these children. It was amazing to see thousands and thousands of cupcakes being delivered to the different malls”, said Cupcakes of HOPE CEO Sandy Cipriano.
“We are so grateful to every single person who donated in return for a delicious sweet treat. It is by far the sweetest way to help save a life,” she said.
In celebration of their 10th anniversary this year, Cupcakes of HOPE shared the milestone at 20 pediatric oncology wards across the country and as a result of these fund-raising efforts, Cupcakes of HOPE is today financially able to assist more than 220 patients every month – the youngest being only 8 months old.
Prof Jennifer Geel, head of the pediatric hematology-oncology section at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital had this to say: “We talk about the financial toxicity of cancer treatment. A diagnosis of cancer in the family is almost always financially devastating, even if you have medical insurance. The support our patients get from Cupcakes of HOPE makes a world of difference and helps make the cancer journey a little easier.”
“The morale boost when the Cupcakes of HOPE ladies visit our unit is so important. Caring for children with cancer is emotionally draining, but the visits from the Cupcake Angels give us all a much-needed boost,” said Prof Geel.
She added that research has confirmed that treatment abandonment decreases if families of children with cancer receive financial and psycho-social assistance. “Never forget the importance of contribution makes in saving these precious little lives,” she said.
Now Cupcakes of HOPE will host their last #Bake4cancer fundraiser on the 31st of October, Superhero Day. This a day where you can dress up as a superhero for YOUR superhero. School and corporate companies are invited to bake a batch of cupcakes in celebration of our little cancer heroes.
