It’s a ding-dong battle as the top 5 tussle for the top spot!
With just a few days left until voting closes at midnight on October 31, this year’s Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge is proving to be a real ding-dong battle with five restaurants tussling it out to take the top spot. And in a turnaround for the books, two of those top five contenders are Potchefstroom-based eateries, confirming that residents of this North West city are not only pizza lovers, but loyal and ardent customers.
The top 5 – in alphabetical order are:
- Bardelli’s (Kenilworth, Cape Town)
- Corlie’s Italian (Somerset West)
- Ferdinando’s Pizza (Observatory, Cape Town)
- Julia’s Eatalian (Potchefstroom)
- Oukraal Restaurant (Potchefstroom)
But, warns Porcupine Ridge spokesman Lynton Kaiser, that could all change in the next 48 hours and he urges consumers to get out there, support their favourite pizzerias and vote!
“It’s really been a great challenge this year,” he says, “with previous contenders and some newcomers all in the mix. And how fantastic to see Potch do so well! But who knows – with enough customers making a last ditch effort to vote, we could see one or two new contenders creep into the current top 5!”
The rest of the eateries that make up the top 20 as of today are:
- Al Pescatore (Ballito)
- Bossa Castle Walk (Pretoria)
- Del Forno (Blairgowrie)
- Fat Harrys (Kenilworth)
- Fochville Coffee & Bistro (Fochville)
- Fratelli Ferndale (Ferndale)
- Gino’s (Stellenbosch)
- Knockout Pub and Grill (Vanderbijlpark)
- Mooiuitsig Kombuis (Klein Brak River)
- Satori (Kalk Bay)
- Spizzy Pizza (Ladybrand)
- Street Cafè, Drostdy Village (Wolmaransstad)
- The Broken Pot Restaurant (Potchefstroom)
- Toni’s Fully Furnished Pizza Co. (Pretoria)
- West Café (Pretoria)
Voting closes at midnight on Thursday, October 31, with the top 10 – and the overall winner – revealed in mid-November. The restaurant with the most votes will be crowned South Africa’s favourite pizzeria, picking up the ultimate bragging rights as well as wine and marketing collateral to the value of R40 000. A new introduction this year sees additional prizes for all of the top 10 restaurants, each of which will receive R1,800 in vouchers for their staff as well as three cases of wine to award to their top, Porcupine Ridge-selling servers.
Over the past two months, eight lucky consumers, voting for their favourite venue, won prizes of Porcupine Ridge wines and EarthFire pizza accessories. One lucky voter – yet to be named – will be selected Grand Prize Winner and will win an EarthFire Tabletop Pizza Oven, pizza for a year from their favourite pizzeria (to the value of R2 000) and five cases of Porcupine Ridge Wines, for a combined value of R10 000.
