Experience Ernie Els Wines: The Icon of the Helderberg

by Juhi

Set against the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, Ernie Els Wines offers more than just exceptional wines – it’s a place where legacy, landscape and hospitality meet. October is an ideal time to visit. The vines are bursting with new growth, the views stretch across Stellenbosch to Table Mountain, and every element of the estate reflects the elegance and character that define the brand.

Today, Ernie Els Wines produces four distinct ranges with a core focus on Cabernet Sauvignon – the signature varietal of the Helderberg. Sixty percent of the vineyards are planted to Cabernet, grown in dedicated north- and northeast-facing blocks. These slopes feature high-potential Granite Soils, rich in clay and primarily classified within the Tukulu and Oakleaf families. Together with the Helderberg’s elevation and cooling ocean breezes, they provide the ideal conditions for crafting full-bodied, fruit-driven reds with structure and staying power.

Guests can explore the full portfolio through a guided tasting experience led by knowledgeable advisors, all trained directly by the cellar and vineyard teams. The tasting includes vintage-specific rarities released exclusively at the winery, giving visitors a deeper look into the site, the philosophy, and the evolution of the wines.

The restaurant offers a seasonally curated menu of modern farmhouse cuisine, served in an open-plan space that spills out onto an expansive terrace. From here, guests can take in panoramic views of the vineyards and mountains. A highlight of the food experience is the custom-built Grillworks – a premium wood-fired grill inspired by South African braai culture. Dishes are paired to showcase the wines and the estate’s commitment to flavour, place and craft.

Beyond the wine and food, there’s more to explore. Try your hand on the Chipping Green – a playful nod to Ernie’s sporting roots. Visit the Trophy Room, a tribute to his illustrious golf career, or browse the Vinothèque, home to collectible releases and mature vintages. Every detail of the estate, from its oak and granite finishes to its carefully curated art and architecture, is designed to honour both the landscape and the lifestyle that shaped it.

Whether it’s your first visit or a return to a familiar favourite, Ernie Els Wines invites you to discover a destination where precision winemaking, heartfelt hospitality, and the spirit of the Helderberg come together beautifully. Open seven days a week for tastings and lunch. Bookings recommended. bookings@ernieelswines.com
