In September, Ceremony Matcha Bar opened its windows on the Sea Point Promenade, just steps from the Atlantic Ocean and at the heart of Cape Town’s wellness culture. It was imagined as a space for ritual, presence, and community – a place where the coastal energy met Ceremony’s world of wellbeing and calm.
From Ceremony to Community
For founder Mikayla McClean, who launched Ceremony Matcha in 2022, the bar is a natural next step. Over the past three years, she has introduced South Africans to the quiet power of Ceremonial Grade Matcha, sourcing sustainable blends directly from Kagoshima, Japan, and cultivating a loyal community who see matcha as both a daily ritual and a lifestyle.
A Menu with Michelin Inspiration
The menu has been crafted with Michelin-trained chef Kira Jacobs, blending Japanese inspiration with South African sensibilities. Alongside Ceremony’s signature blends are seasonal creations, including layered matcha lattes, roasted hōjicha infused with chai spices, delicate honey-floral cold brews, and savoury bakes elevated with Japanese shichimi togarashi. Every item reflects Ceremony’s philosophy: intentional, minimal, and sensory.
Beyond the Counter: A Community Hub
Ceremony Matcha Bar is more than a café – it’s a gathering space. “Ceremony has always been about more than matcha,” says McClean. “It’s about creating moments of presence and connection. The bar is an extension of that – a place to pause, sip and savour.”
The venue will also host yoga flows, sound journeys, collaborative pop-ups, and curated gatherings, embedding itself in Cape Town’s wellness-first lifestyle.
Design Inspired by Coast and Culture
Positioned along the Promenade, the interior seamlessly blends minimalist Japanese influences with soft coastal textures. Travertine surfaces, natural wood, and linen wallpaper, along with muted tones, create a calming environment that mirrors the rhythm of the Atlantic shoreline.
