Warm up winter: Discover the original glühwein

by Richard Van Staden

Cold weather calls for something warm, comforting, and easy to enjoy and original glühwein delivers just that. We’ve taken a full-bodied red wine and added traditional mulled spices like cinnamon and cloves, with a hint of citrus, to create a classic winter drink that’s full of flavour and wonderfully aromatic.

It’s quick to prepare too: simply pour into a saucepan to heat gently on the stove or use a microwave-safe mug and warm it for about 30 seconds on high. Just be sure not to let it boil, as this may affect the taste. Once hot, serve with a slice of lemon or orange for an extra twist and take time to enjoy!

To elevate your glühwein moment even more, try these delicious and easy pairings:

Cheese platter
The bold, spiced character of glühwein pairs beautifully with soft, creamy cheeses. Brie, camembert, or a mature cheddar make a perfect match. Add crackers, nuts, and a few slices of pear or fig for a simple yet impressive platter. It’s a quick way to bring warmth and richness to any gathering or a quiet night in.

Dark chocolate
Few things go better with glühwein than dark chocolate. The slight bitterness of the chocolate complements the sweetness and spice of the wine, creating a rich, balanced flavour. Enjoy it with a chocolate square, a slice of cake, or a warm brownie for a cosy, indulgent treat.

Original glühwein is a winter favourite that brings warmth to any occasion – no fuss, just heat and enjoy.
